Marissa R.

I’m passionate about helping people and animals. It’s so incredibly rewarding to know
my efforts make a difference in the lives of people.
Why This Work Matters
I am a displaced Altadena resident and have received so much love, generosity and support.
Seeing people give so much makes me want to give back to the people and support the
community however I can.
On culturally responsive care: Providing support and empathetic view that respects the
community, history and culture of the individuals. Valuing the traditions and experiences these
people have been through and respecting the loss of community. Trying to see the experience
through their eyes.
Connection to Altadena
The resilience of the close knit community. To see the generosity and support of my neighbors.
Meaningful tradition: Christmas tree lane is very special to me as I lived a few streets over and
have special memories of visiting with my family.
In my work: The legacy of community, support, strength and resilience. The courage to rebuild
and show up.
A Defining Moment
Every Altadena family has a story and experience. We are all experiencing loss and grief. My
heart is full when I know that I can make a difference with families somehow knowing I made
their day brighter or the load they carry lighter. The range of tragedy is wide, I plan to use the
resources I have to support the families in need.
How this shapes my work: I will give all of my effort and resources to help where appropriate.
Vision for the Future
My hope for Altadena: A tighter knit community knowing everything we have been through. A
stronger community knowing we all pitched in during the toughest time and knowing our
neighbors helped rebuild the beautiful community.
What I hope families feel: A sense of love, warmth, caretaking and RELIEF. A little respite from
the tragedy. A breath of fresh air.
Bringing to the Work
Strengths: I’m very empathetic, a great listener and able to connect with people.
On collaboration: The friendship and support means the world to me. I thrive on connecting and
building relationships with people. I also can leverage their experience and perspective to serve my families in a better way.
Beyond the Work
What brings me joy: Going to the beach, spending time with friends, helping animals, teaching
on Catalina island.
Favorite genres: Thriller
When not volunteering: Hitting the gym, working in pet health, teaching marine science.
Fun fact: I was a gymnast as a child and would love to still do all the skills!
Words I live by: "Last night I took an L, but tonight I bounce back."
